West Virginia, Arkansas, Florida, and More!

CFB Roundup – March 2, 2025

Good morning, and welcome back to CFB Roundup from CFB Home – the first daily newsletter that’s all college football, all the time with no bias, no slant, and no fluff.

West Virginia Cancels Spring Game

West Virginia shared via Reddit CFB yesterday that the Mountaineers will not be doing a true scrimmage or game.

Based on that, it sounds like the Gold-Blue Showcase may be transitioned into another event for fans to still get to enjoy seeing the team in action, just not in a game.

This is just another program in a long line, as Nebraska, Texas, Ohio State, USC, and others have all started to not have true spring games in an effort to prevent tampering.

Arkansas WR Jordan Anthony Wins SEC Indoor 60-Meter Title

Arkansas WR Jordan Anthony won the SEC 60M title by running a time of 6.54 seconds.

Anthony transferred in from Texas A&M after last year and finished with 8 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown on the season for the Razorbacks.

Florida DL Coach Gerald Chatman Sticking with Gators, Not Going to LSU

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman is reporting that there was a lot of consideration from both sides for Florida DL Coach Gerald Chatman to head to LSU, but he is staying put on the Gators staff.

Feldman shared on Twitter that he strongly considered heading to LSU, but ultimately is going to be staying with Florida for his second season on Coach Billy Napier’s staff.

LSU is still looking for a new DL coach after Bo Davis left for the pros, which means LSU is going to be hiring its 8th DL Coach since the 2020 season.

Coach Chatman has experience on the LSU staff, as he was an interim DL Coach back in 2023, but he left for a full-time role with Tulane in 2024.

Steve Sarkisian Hopes Loser of Texas v. Ohio State Not Punished for CFP

Coach Steve Sarkisian shared with The Herd that he’s hoping the loser of Texas v. Ohio State does not get punished for playing in a challenging non-conference game.

“I love this opportunity. I think it’s great for our players in summer workouts and training camp to know who we’re getting ready to go play and the task at hand. I think now with the expanded playoffs, as long as we don’t punish those teams for going to play those games then it’s great for college football. It’s opening weekend, it’s Texas and Ohio State. It’s a rematch of the semifinal game of last year’s playoffs. It’s great for their program, great for our program. That’s what the players we recruit, that’s the games they want to play in. They want to be in those big-time games.”

Coach continued, “this is a great opportunity for both programs. Somebody’s going to win, somebody’s going to lose. But hopefully, the team that doesn’t win the game, doesn’t get punished from the committee for playing in that game early in the season.”

Steve Sarkisian on Arch Manning’s Maturity

In an interview with SportsCenter, Texas’ Coach Sarkisian opened up to rave about soon-to-be starting QB Arch Manning’s maturity.

“You always see guys mature, right? We get them when they’re 17, 18-years old, and then, you know, as they grow in the program, and you start to see them, not only physically mature, but mentally mature. It’s no different. This guy has really grown up in our program. You know, he was the guy that was so fired up, every game day, he showed up. But I think he saw the value of learning, and kind of taking heed to what Quinn [Ewers] was going through, ‘okay, how would I handle those situations?’ And so, I think we’re getting a guy that might be a first-year starter, but yet, kind of has the experience of what it’s going to feel like to handle some of those situations as they come up.”

Steve Sarkisian Talks Expectations for Arch Manning’s First Season as a Starter

As for Coach Sarkisian’s expectations, he believes he can be a leader from Day 1 thanks to his experience watching how Quinn Ewers handled expectations:

“I’m excited for Arch. I feel like his progression has been perfect. A chance for a couple years to be with Quinn to a. learn who we are systematically, but b. just to watch how Quinn has handled things. Quinn’s journey was not the smoothest, right? There [were] injuries and how he responded to those. At Texas, if you don’t go 30-for-30 with 5 touchdowns, everyone’s going to point to those one or two incompletions and all that stuff. But how Quinn handled it, I think, was good for Arch.”

Coach Sarkisian continued, “we’re watching him in winter workouts and offseason stuff really becoming the leader of the team, like the quarterback has to be. And he has such a great personality that I think his teammates really respond to him, the coaches have started to respond to him. So, I think things are off to a really good start for him.”

UNLV EDGE Antonio Doyle Enters Portal with Do Not Contact Tag

On3’s Pete Nakos is reporting that UNLV EDGE Antonio Doyle has entered the transfer portal.

Doyle began his career at Texas A&M after being a blue chip recruit in high school.

In his one season with the Rebels in 2024, Doyle finished with 6.5 sacks, 56 tackles, and 3 passes defended.

Doyle spent 2021 with Texas A&M before transferring to Jackson State for 2022 and 2023. He then transferred to UNLV in 2024, and appears to be on the move once more.

3-Star QB Terry Walker III Sets Visits to Duke and Virginia

The top QB from the state of Indiana, Terry Walker III, has set visits this April for Duke and Virginia.

As for what he likes about Virginia, he has previously shared, “I love Coach Elliot, Coach Lamb, and Coach Kitchings. They have a good group of genuine men there leading the program and I truly believe they will start trending up more and more.”

As for Duke, he shared that he loves their offensive scheme: “they push the ball down the field a lot and it’s a very quarterback friendly offense. I also love the history Coach Brewer has with quarterbacks he’s proven to help them excel and take the next big step in their game.”

Walker is the 817th ranked prospect nationally and the 63rd ranked QB according to the On3 industry composite.

4-Star EDGE Zavion Griffin-Haynes Sets Georgia OV

4-star EDGE Zavion Griffin-Haynes has set an official visit with the Georgia Bulldogs for this summer after having decommitted from North Carolina back when Mack Brown was fired.

Griffin-Haynes will visit Athens the weekend of June 6th.

He said of Georgia, “the love and time they put into the program they make sure their players are good in all aspects. They’re also genuine. They’re not going to tell you anything wrong and they want the best.”

Griffin-Haynes ranks as high as 93rd nationally and 8th at his position according to Rivals, but the On3 industry composite ranks him 225th nationally and 27th at the EDGE position.

4-Star CB Havon Finney Reclassifies to 2026

4-star CB Havon Finney reclassified to the Class of 2026, moving up from the Class of 2027.

Finney shared with On3, “I have talked to my parents about it, my parents were always going to support it if I could handle it, and we made the decision earlier this year.”

Finney was on track to be one of the top prospects in the 2027 class, which is likely not going to change now that he’s in the 2026 class.

Rivals has Finney rated as a 5-star, with On3 and 247 both having him as a 4-star. He ranks as the 89th player nationally and 10th CB in the class of 2026 (for now) according to On3, with the industry composite ranking him 134th nationally and 15th at the CB position.

As for the programs involved in his recruitment, Finney shared, “LSU, Ohio State, Michigan, USC, UCLA, Texas, Oregon, and Texas A&M are schools I could take official visits to. … I have good relationships with coaches at those schools and nothing is set, but those schools are definitely some I am thinking about.”

Finney has visited Oregon, UCLA, USC, and LSU in the past. The other programs would be his first visit there.
