#6 Tennessee Goes Into Norman And Convincingly Beats #15 Oklahoma 25-15

#6 Tennessee beat #15 Oklahoma in Norman, OK by a final tally of 25-15 to put a damper on Oklahoma’s first conference game as a member of the SEC.

Oklahoma QB Jackson Arnold was benched after starting 7-for-16 with 54 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception. With a nearly zero QBR of just 1.3, Oklahoma turned turned to Michael Hawkins Jr., who finished 11-for-18 with 132 yards and a touchdown. Hawkins also led Oklahoma rushers with 22 yards on 12 total carries.

As much as has been made about Tennessee’s offense this season, Oklahoma was held to 36 rushing yards and a total of 3.26 yards per play offensively.

Even though the game finished only 10 points apart, this game started to be out of reach early, as ESPN’s Win Probability gave Tennessee greater than a 95% chance to win shortly after the two-minute timeout in the first half.

QB Nico Iamaleava finished 13-for-21 for 194 yards and a touchdown for Tennessee, and running backs Dylan Sampson and DeSean Bishop combined for 157 rushing yards and a touchdown on 40 carries.

Both teams struggled to sustain drives, as Tennessee only had 13 first downs and went 6-for-19 on 3rd downs, while Oklahoma only had 16 first downs and went 4-for-18 on conversion downs.

Tennessee is off next week before traveling to Arkansas, while Oklahoma heads to Auburn next week.

#7 Missouri Survives at Home in Double Overtime 30-27 against a Feisty Vanderbilt Team

#7 Missouri survived against a Vanderbilt team that took it to the wire and ultimately lost after missing a field goal to force the dueling 2-point conversions of triple overtime.

Missouri kicker Blake Craig missed three field goals on the day, but made a 37-yard field goal to give the Tigers their decisive points that would ultimately go on to win in double overtime.

Missouri running back Nate Noel ran for 199 yards on 24 carries, and quarterback Brady Cook threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns. WR Luther Burden III caught both touchdowns, also leading the game with 76 receiving yards on 6 catches.

Vanderbilt also made some plays offensively, as QB Diego Pavia finished 14-for-23 for 178 passing yards and 2 touchdowns while also leading the Commodores with 84 rushing yards on 17 carries. RB AJ Newberry scored the game-tying touchdown in the 2nd half which brought the score to 20-20.

Missouri has a bye week before traveling to Texas A&M, currently ranked #25. Vanderbilt also has a bye week before hosting Alabama, currently ranked #4.

#18 Michigan Pulls Off Upset 27-24 to Defend the Big House Against #11 USC

#18 Michigan played its first Big Ten game of the season yesterday, upsetting #11 USC in its first Big Ten game as a member of the conference by a final score of 27-24.

Michigan started out strong, racing out to a 14-0 lead, but USC battled back to take a 24-20 lead that it held to about 4 minutes left in the game before Michigan put together a 10-play, 89-yard touchdown drive that would be the winning drive for the Wolverines.

A lot was made about Michigan’s starting QB decision, and QB Alex Orji finished 7-for-12 for 32 passing yards and 43 added rushing yards on 13 carries for the Wolverines.

Running backs Donovan Edwards and especially Kalel Mullings more than made up for it, though, as Edwards finished with 74 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, with Mullings finishing with 159 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

The Michigan defense also excelled, slowing a potent USC offense to only 5.19 yards per play as Miller Moss only picked up 283 passing yards on 51 total passes.

USC welcomes Wisconsin out west next week, and Michigan welcomes Minnesota into the Big House next week.

#12 Utah Races Out To Early Lead to Outlast #14 Oklahoma State 22-19 on the Road

#12 Utah looked strong, especially early, to get past #14 Oklahoma State 22-19 in Stillwater.

Cam Rising did not play for the Utes despite ESPN’s Pete Thamel confidence in his availability. Isaac Wilson played in his place, going 17-for-29 for 207 yards, a touchdown, two interceptions, and 41 rushing yards on 6 carries. Utah running back Micah Bernard was the star of the show, though, rushing for 182 yards on 25 carries.

Utah kicker Cole Becker also went 3-for-4 on field goals in a game where every point mattered.

Oklahoma State pulled quarterback Alan Bowman (before putting him back in later), and Bowman finished 16-for-33 for 206 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Running back Ollie Gordon was also contained fairly well by Utah’s defense, as he only ran for 42 yards on 11 carries. Gordon also added 16 receiving yards on 3 catches.

Utah hosts Arizona next week, and Oklahoma State travels to Kansas State next week.

BYU Outscores #13 Kansas State 38-3 in Final 32 Minutes to Upset Wildcats 38-9

#13 Kansas State got out to a 6-0 lead in the early going, but after BYU scored 17 points in the final 2 minutes and 10 seconds of the first half, the Cougars never looked back.

Kansas State outgained BYU by over 100 yards and finished with about 5.1 yards per play compared to BYU’s 5.02 yards per play, but the Wildcats never found the end zone and turned the ball over three times.

Kansas State QB Avery Johnson finished 15-for-28 for 130 yards and two interceptions while also adding 74 rushing yards on 11 carries.

Despite Kansas State having over a 70% chance to win after the two minute timeout in the first half, BYU was already up to a 90+% chance to win before two minutes had come off the clock in the 3rd quarter once the Cougars had a 24-6 lead.

Kansas State hosts Oklahoma State next weekend, while 4-0 BYU travels to Baylor next weekend.

Buffalo Upsets #23 Northern Illinois In Overtime

Buffalo kicker Upton Bellenfant kicked a walk-off field goal to give the Buffalo Bulls a road win over #23 Northern Illinois in overtime.

Northern Illinois took a 14-3 lead in the first half, but Buffalo continued to chip away, eventually taking a 20-17 lead before Northern Illinois kicked a field goal with 24 seconds left in the game to force overtime.

After Buffalo blocked Northern Illinois’ kick to start the overtime period, Buffalo scored the game-winning field goal its turn with the ball.

This was a tough outcome for Northern Illinois, as the Huskies almost doubled up the Bulls in terms of yards – 359 vs. 184 – and dominated on conversion downs – 11/24 vs. 4/17. But in terms of score, Buffalo had the final edge 23-20.

Buffalo plays next week on the road at UConn, while NIU heads over to NC State to play on The CW next week.

James Madison Beats North Carolina 70-50 With 53-Point First Half

James Madison scored 53 first half points against North Carolina en route to a 70-50 win over the Tar Heels.

It was back and forth at the start, as North Carolina held an early 14-11 lead. But then James Madison proceeded to score 6 touchdowns with one lone Tar Heel touchdown intersecting these 6 scores. By that point, North Carolina was able to score 29 second half points, but it was too late as James Madison added 17 more points for good measure.

Both teams finished with over 600 yards, as James Madison QB Alonza Barnett III finished 22-for-34 with 388 passing yards, 99 rushing yards, and all seven offensive touchdowns (5 passing, 2 rushing). The Dukes also added a pick-six, a punt return TD, and 2 field goals to get to 70 points total.

North Carolina QB Jacolby Criswell finished 28-for-48 with 475 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. North Carolina RB Omarion Hampton also finished with 139 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns on 19 carries.

The 3-0 Dukes host Ball State this weekend, and North Carolina travels to Duke this weekend.

Florida State Halts The #Calgorithm With Messy 14-9 Win

Florida State picked up its first win of the season over previously unbeaten Cal at home despite getting outgained by Cal 410 yards to 284.

Both teams ran for 107 rushing yards, but Cal QB Fernando Mendoza outdueled Florida State QB DJ Uiagalelei by 126 passing yards.

2 touchdown drives were all Florida State needed as its defense pulled off timely stop after timely stop, holding Cal to just 5/15 on 3rd downs.

Florida State also racked up 7 sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Additionally, in a game in which Cal lost by 5, two missed field goals from Cal’s kicker made a big difference as Cal’s final drive got into the red zone but Cal could not get the touchdown it would have needed to take the lead.

Florida State next makes the trip to SMU while Cal’s next game is a home game against Miami in 2 weeks after a bye.

Colorado Beats Baylor In Overtime After Miracle Hail Mary

After falling behind 24-10, Colorado was able to storm back with yet another impressive performance from both Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter.

With little time on the clock, Shedeur Sanders nearly connected with Will Sheppard on a Hail Mary that would’ve tied the game, but Sheppard dropped the ball. Thankfully for the Buffaloes, Sanders did connect with LaJohntay Wester on the final play on a Hail Mary to force overtime. In overtime, it looked like Baylor was going to tie it up before the Bears fumbled it out of the back of the end zone while trying to dive for the touchdown – a fumble caused by Travis Hunter getting his helmet on the ball.

Baylor QB Sawyer Robertson lead all Bears rushers with 82 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries to go along with his passing stat line of 11-for-21 for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Ultimately it was not enough to outpace Colorado’s 341 passing yards from Shedeur Sanders, 130 of which went to Travis Hunter.

Baylor hosts BYU next week, and Colorado heads out to UCF next weekend.

SMU Blasts Rival TCU 66-42 to Take Back Iron Skillet

SMU beat TCU in the final iteration of the Iron Skillet that will take place in Dallas, as TCU turned the ball over 5 times, Sonny Dykes got ejected, and SMU’s defense and special teams contributed 3 – nearly 4 – touchdowns.

TCU outgained SMU, actually, putting up 480 yards to SMU’s 375. But SMU won the turnover battle 5 to 1 and had the same yards per play (after rounding) of 6.15.

SMU safety Ahmaad Moses had two interceptions, including a pick-six, and SMU cornerback Brandon Crossley got in on the defensive scoring with a scoop-and-score on an early 4th down where it looked like TCU’s Josh Hoover never really controlled the ball after pulling back the handoff.

SMU also sacked Hoover once, but it was an impactful one, as it led to a fumble that was returned to the one-yard line before being punched in by RB Brashard Smith one play later.

Roderick Daniels Jr. also returned a punt for a touchdown to give SMU a 17-0 lead before the offense even got the ball a second time.

Ultimately, SMU was able to run for 238 yards on 42 carries, with Smith accounting for 127 of those yards and all of the touchdowns.

TCU WR Jack Bech led all receivers in this game with 166 yards and 2 touchdowns on 8 catches as he and Eric McAlister (6 catches, 114 yards, 1 touchdown) were the lone bright spots for the Horned Frogs. TCU QB Josh Hoover finished 28-for-43 with 396 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions in an up-and-down performance that had some very high highs and some very low lows.

SMU hosts Florida State for its first ACC game next weekend, as TCU heads to Kansas next weekend.
