Billy Napier Updates Injury Status of RB Montrell Johnson

After being listed as week-to-week following a knee injury early in training camp, RB Montrell Johnson is expected to be a full-go for Florida’s Week 1 game against Miami.

Johnson has led the Gators in rushing each of the last two seasons, so his availability for the Gators offense could be a huge boost.

In the event Johnson is either on a pitch count or re-aggravates the injury, Treyaun Webb, Jadan Baugh, Ja’Kobi Jackson, and KD Daniels are all names that could get some carries, with Webb especially likely to lead the way after Johnson.

Pete Thamel Expects Max Johnson and Conner Harrell to Play for UNC in Opener

Pete Thamel is reporting that he expects both Max Johnson and Conner Harrell to play for North Carolina in the opener against Minnesota tonight.

As for the two QBs, Thamel pointed out that Johnson brings 1,600 snaps into the season, but that Harrell brings a dynamic ability that could be effectively utilized situationally or in certain Wildcat-style packages.

Harrell might not have the experience or refined talent that Johnson brings, but he brings a level of dynamism that can really stress a defense both in preparation and in an actual game.

Billy Napier’s View of Miami QB Cam Ward

Florida coach Billy Napier recently took some time to talk about Miami QB Cam Ward ahead of the Gators’ Week 1 home matchup.

In evaluating Ward, Napier was fairly positive in his evaluation, where he said that “the thing about him is that he has experience, he has arm talent, he’s accurate, and his ability to extend the plays, escape the pocket, and make off-schedule plays. I think that’s the element that’s very important.”

As for how to disrupt that, Napier believes it will come down to rushing and covering effectively and in tandem. Napier also said that the Gators have watched a ton of film of Ward at his previous stops (Incarnate Word, Washington State) in an effort to figure out how to affect his play.

Billy Napier Considering Playing Both QBs Mertz and Lagway

Florida has one of the most interesting QB rooms in the country, returning starting QB Graham Mertz and bringing in true freshman and 5-star QB DJ Lagway.

Coach Billy Napier recently took some time to share that he liked having differing skillsets for each of his quarterbacks because it allows for unique play scripting and different looks for every opponent to have to prepare for.

Headed into week 1, however, Napier and the Gators are firmly behind Mertz as the team’s QB, but understand that “Lagway’s one play away from running out there and having to play for the Gators.”

Colorado Contacted Pac-12 on Oregon Having Unauthorized Access of Film Before 42-6 Loss

According to a report from Front Office Sports, Colorado contacted the Pac-12 following their 42-6 loss to Oregon regarding possible unauthorized access to practice footage and other data which was supposed to remain confidential.

The report states that when the Pac-12 followed up with Colorado, Colorado decided against moving forward. The team’s video replay service, Catapult, also found no evidence of a data breach.

Colorado did not respond to a request for comment on the report, while Oregon issued a brief statement that it was unaware of anything which might lend credibility to the claims.

Pete Thamel: Alex Orji Prohibitive Favorite for Michigan QB Job

ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting that despite sharing first team snaps with Davis Warren, Alex Orji has taken the lead in the QB battle and is expected to be the prohibitive favorite to win the starting job.

Thamel does expect to see both throughout the Fresno State game, especially if Michigan takes a big lead, but the expectation for Thamel is to start Orji and then go from there.

Orji is more a dual-threat who has seen the field some in the past in specialized packages, while Warren is more of a traditional, drop-back passer who has not seen the field nearly as much.

Hugh Freeze Impressed with Improvements in Year 2

Auburn coach Hugh Freeze took some time recently to reflect on some of the improvements the Tigers have made in Year 2 of his scheme.

Between the roster depth and the scheme understanding, Freeze believes the Tigers are starting to get much closer to where he wants the SEC team to be to compete in the conference.

“Yeah, there’s no question our roster is deeper and looks more like an SEC roster than I’m used to. We’re getting closer.”

With the offensive combination of QB Payton Thorne and RB Jarquez Hunter both returning, and true freshman WR Cam Coleman, the hope around Auburn is that the offense will look closer to what fans of Ole Miss came to expect for those Hugh Freeze teams, as well.

In the future, though, Freeze does still see a lot of room for growth with supplementing the roster and further building out the depth.

Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty Heisman Trophy Campaign

In 2023, Ashton Jeanty led the country in a number of categories – missed tackles, yards after catch, average yards after contact, and first downs recorded – while also leading the Mountain West in a plethora of other categories.

Now, ahead of the 2024 season, Boise State has launched a Heisman campaign for Jeanty centered around being #BuiltDifferent, with more information at the website, hei2man.com.

Vanderbilt’s Clark Lea: Not Naming Starter Before Virginia Tech Game

Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea shared during the SEC teleconference yesterday that he has not named a starting QB publicly, and he plans to continue with that for the time being.

Lea said that the Commodores have four guys – Diego Pavia, Blaze Berlowitz, Nate Johnson, and Drew Dickey – who have all prepared and competed very hard for the job.

It’s possible Vandy goes with a QB by committee approach, but Lea has previously talked about how consistency at that position is paramount, so that’s unlikely.

Pavia has been long thought to be the leader of the group given his experience and overall talent. Pavia threw for 4,423 yards over the past two seasons, also adding another 1,436 yards on the ground.

Scholarship Long Snapper Eli Stein No Longer on Arkansas’ Roster

During an SEC teleconference call yesterday, Arkansas coach Sam Pittman was asked about long snapper Eli Stein. Coach Pittman confirmed that Stein is no longer with the Razorbacks program.

Pittman said that the specifics were currently between him and Eli, but he could go into specifics more next week.

Pittman confirmed that Ashton Ngo will be the team’s new primary long snapper, and that Ngo was placed on scholarship over the weekend, utilizing Arkansas’ last available scholarship.
