Boston College Upsets #10 Florida State 28-13, Seminoles Now 0-2

Once again as the only game on in the time slot, Florida State has been upset, this time to unranked Boston College at home by a final tally of 28-13.

Going into halftime, the Seminoles were outscored 14-6 as Boston College QB Thomas Castellanos ran for two scores before halftime.

After Boston College scored on a very short field following an interception to make it 21-6, Florida State was able to cut the lead to one possession by making it 21-13. However, Boston College walked right down the field to make it a two possession game, and then neither team did much of anything.

Boston College ran for nearly 300 yards against Florida State in head coach Bill O’Brien’s debut with the Eagles. The Seminoles host Memphis after a bye week to try and get the train back on the tracks. Boston College hosts Duquesne next week as it looks to continue its strong ground performance.

Billy Napier Confirms DJ Lagway Taking First Team Reps with Mertz Injured

After Graham Mertz suffered a concussion against Miami, true freshman 5-star QB DJ Lagway saw his first career snaps in his first possible game.

It is not known yet if Mertz or Lagway will get the ball against Samford this weekend, but in the interim, coach Billy Napier has confirmed that Lagway has been the Gator receiving the first team snaps at QB while Mertz goes through concussion protocol.

In the event Mertz is unable to start against Samford, Napier shared that “I think we would play a brand of football that reflects his experience and his strengths. No different than we do each week. But I’ve got a ton of confidence in DJ.”

Florida State Crowd: “We want Brock [Glenn]”

During Florida State’s loss last night, the crowd at some points were calling for backup Brock Glenn.

At this point in the game, DJ Uiagalelei was 3-for-10 with 30 yards.

After that point, to be fair, Uiagalelei went 18-for-32 with 242 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Brock Glenn is a redshirt freshman who appeared in 5 games last season, going 8-for-21 for 55 yards against Louisville in the ACC Championship and going 9-for-26 for 139 yards and two interceptions against Georgia in the Orange Bowl.

Injured Oklahoma C Branson Hickman “Looked Remarkably Good” in Practice

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables shared that transfer center Branson Hickman looked remarkably good in practice after exiting the Temple game early with an injury.

Hickman is an important piece of the Sooners’ offense and offensive line, which was the biggest question for the team coming into the season, so the fact Hickman’s injury status has Coach Venables optimistic is a good sign.

Venables is unsure if Hickman will be available for its Week 2 matchup against Houston, though. This will definitely be an injury to track for Sooners fans (as well as anyone betting on this game, especially Sooners player props).

ESPN’s FPI Updated After Week 1

ESPN’s FPI model has been updated following the games of Week 1.

The biggest loser is obviously Florida State, dropping from #11 preseason to #17 after Week 0 to #36 after Week 1.

Looking around the rest of the Top 25, the SEC and Big Ten absolutely dominate the Top 10, taking up 9 of the 10 spots, with #6 Notre Dame the only outsider of the Power 2.

Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, and Penn State make up the Top 5.

Further down the list, the ACC has 3 programs in the Top 25 with Miami (#11), Louisville (#13), and Clemson (#22) all representing the conference.

Of the last 7 programs in the Top 25, the Big 12 is home to 5 of them with Kansas, UCF, Kansas State, Arizona, and Utah all showing up.

Mario Cristobal on DL Rueben Bain: Out Against Florida A&M

Star Miami DL Rueben Bain Jr. was injured on Florida’s first drive of the game this past weekend and did not return to the game.

Coach Mario Cristobal shared that they already knew that Bain would be out against Florida A&M in Week 2, and that “it’s going to be a couple of weeks.” As for the exact timeline, Coach Cristobal is not entirely sure yet, because the medical staff will have to be running tests throughout the week, “but he is not going to be playing this week.”

Bain was a high 4-star recruit in the 2023 class and put up 12.5 TFLs and 7.5 sacks as a true freshman for the Hurricanes in the 2023 season. This performance earned him ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and a Freshman All-American designation.

Lincoln Riley: I Don’t Coach for Headlines

As said in yesterday’s newsletter, much has been written about USC this previous offseason coming off of an 8-5 season where the Trojans had the reigning Heisman winner and eventual #1 NFL draft pick.

Following the 27-20 win over #13 LSU, Lincoln Riley shared that “I don’t coach for the media. I don’t coach for headlines. We just try to do what’s best in our program. … We know what we’ve been building. We’re very confident with the approach that we’re taking, with the people that we’re putting in our program – players, staff, everyone. … I know we’re making progress.”

Alabama OT Kadyn Proctor Shoulder Injury Not Long Term Concern, Is Week-to-Week

Alabama OT Kadyn Proctor didn’t play in the Crimson Tide’s season opening thrashing against Western Kentucky as he was in a sling thanks to a shoulder injury he sustained during warmups.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports is reporting that this injury comes with no long-term concern for Proctor’s availability, and is more of a week-to-week level injury.

There has still been no comment from Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer on Proctor’s status beyond what was included in the newsletter yesterday that Proctor will be getting monitored throughout the week before it is clear to the Alabama staff if Proctor will miss more time, and if so, how much time missed should be expected.

Texas A&M C Mark Nabou Out for Season

Texas A&M coach Mike Elko shared that starting center Mark Nabou is out for the season after suffering a lower leg injury in the Notre Dame game.

Nabou started in all 12 games last season as a redshirt freshman, with 11 starts at LG and one at C. Nabou also made a lot of progress last season, going from averaging 2.3 pressures allowed per game in Texas A&M’s first 7 games of the season, to allowing 1 pressure allowed per game in Texas A&M’s final 5 games of the season.

Kolinu’u Faaiu is likely to play in Nabou’s place, and he was the offensive lineman who pushed Nabou for the starting spot the most. Faaiu is a transfer from Utah where he made 8 starts at center and 11 total OL appearances last season.

3-Star ATH Matthew Outten Flips from Virginia Tech to Penn State

3-Star ATH Matthew Outten flipped his commitment from Virginia Tech to Penn State yesterday after Outten originally committed to the Hokies back on July 1st.

Outten stated that the flip comes because he believes Penn State is the best place to pursue his academic and athletic aspirations.

Outten ranks as high as the 141st ranked prospect nationally and 5th ranked ATH (247Sports for both). According to the On3 industry composite, Outten ranks 406th nationally and 15th for the ATH position.

This is Penn State’s 24th commitment overall, a class which ranks 17th nationally and 5th in the Big Ten.

Virginia Tech still has 16 commitments for its 2025 class, which ranks 39th nationally and 9th in the ACC.
