Georgia Tech Upsets #10 Florida State with Walk-Off Field Goal in Ireland

The first game of Week 0 did not disappoint and was well worth the 200+ day wait following the 2023 National Championship.

Florida State took an early 8-0 nothing lead on its opening drive before Georgia Tech responded with a touchdown drive of its own.

Fast forward to Georgia Tech holding on to a 14-11 lead right before halftime, Florida State’s Ryan Fitzgerald nailed a 59-yard field to tie things up.

DJ Uiagalelei did not have a stellar game and was not asked to make too many big throws, but he did have a strong drive towards the end to tie things up at 21 before the Seminoles gave the ball back to Georgia Tech with 6:33 to go.

Unfortunately for Florida State, it would not get the ball again, as the Yellow Jackets drained the rest of the clock and kicked a 44-yard field goal to walk off with a 24-21 victory.

Uiagalelei finished 19-27 for 193 yards, while Haynes King finished with 146 passing yards, 54 rushing yards, and 2 rushing touchdowns.

SMU’s Preston Stone Hits RJ Maryland for Go-Ahead Touchdown Late in 4th Quarter

SMU sputtered through most of last night of but would go on to win thanks to a 34-yard touchdown pass from Preston Stone to TE RJ Maryland, who had an incredible second half for the Mustangs.

After entering the 4th quarter down 24-13, SMU needed Maryland and Stone to step up big, as well as for some luck that came from Nevada muffing a kickoff which started a drive on the one-yard-line and resulted in a safety for SMU.

The 4th quarter really favored the Mustangs, which averaged 8.7 yards per play and outgained the Wolfpack 191 yards to 54.

Nevada QB Brendon Lewis had a strong game, accounting for over 200 total yards and a pair of touchdowns, but ultimately it was just not quite enough.

5-Star Safety Jonah Williams Commits to Texas

5-star safety Jonah Williams committed to Texas yesterday over other finalists Texas A&M, LSU, Oregon, and USC, among other offers.

Williams visited Texas back in July, and that visit was instrumental in Texas securing Williams’ commitment.

Throughout the recruitment process, Williams shared that he was closest with safety coach Blake Gideon and defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.

Williams is ranked as high as the 7th ranked player nationally per 247Sports, and On3, 247Sports, and ESPN all name Williams the top safety in the 2025 class.

According to On3’s industry composite, Williams ranks 10th nationally and 1st at his position.

This is Texas’ 11th Blue Chip commitment and 18th commitment, overall, for a 2025 class which has been catapulted into 8th place nationally and 6th in the SEC.

SMU CB Brandon Crossley Ejected for Spitting at/on Nevada Player

In one of the weirder penalties in the SMU/Nevada game, which featured plenty of penalty flags, SMU CB Brandon Crossley was ejected from the game. The referee said that it was for spitting on a Nevada player, and that he was ejected as a result.

Crossley and head coach Rhett Lashlee vehemently argued the call to the referee to no avail, which the broadcast speculated were objections that Crossley was spitting just generally and had no ill-intent towards a Nevada player.

However, the moment does not have any video due to no television cameras catching it, and the moment also came with the added context of earlier chippy events. In the first quarter, there were offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties as two Nevada players and SMU WR Jordan Hudson got into it. Hudson and one Nevada player were jawing back and forth, then Hudson open hand slapped/pushed a Nevada player in the face, and then a Nevada player came in and pushed Hudson firmly onto his backside.

Florida State RB Lawrance Toafili: We’re Still in Good Spot After Georgia Tech Loss

Following the loss to Georgia Tech, Florida State RB Lawrance Toafili shared that he and the rest of the Seminoles are not ready to hit the panic button yet on the 2024 season.

Toafili said, “It’s the little details, man. We clean up certain things. Me as well. I gotta be more explosive. Make the plays that need to be made. But for the most part, it’s just cleaning up those little details. I feel like we’re still in a good spot. … I know how we work and I know what the team is about … We’ve just gotta get better and that’s how we’re gonna go about our business.”

4-Star IOL Jayvon McFadden Commits to Ohio State

4-star IOL Jayvon McFadden committed to Ohio State yesterday over offers from Georgia, Michigan, Penn State, Oregon, and others.

For McFadden, he loved the vibes of Coach Day and Coach Frye. He also particularly enjoyed the thought of how he will fit in the Buckeyes’ overall scheme.

On3 and Rivals rates him a 4-star, with Rivals rating him as high as the 12th ranked player for his position. According to the On3 industry composite, McFadden ranks 395th nationally and 31st at his position.

This is Ohio State’s 20th Blue Chip commitment and 25th commitment overall, a class which ranks 1st in the country still.

Anthony Colandrea Named Virginia’s Starting QB

As a true freshman in 2023, Colandrea passed for almost 2,000 yards and had a so-so touchdown to interception ratio of 13-9. Though those stats don’t jump off the page, they were accomplished in only eight games and six starts, and the over 2,000 total yards Colandrea accounted for led all true freshmen QBs in 2023.

The Cavaliers begin their season against Richmond on August 31st at 6 PM on ACCNX and/or ESPN+.

High 3-Star CB Aidan Anding Commits to LSU

High 3-star CB Aidan Anding committed to LSU yesterday over his other finalists, Texas and Arkansas.

For Anding, staying in his home state of Louisiana was a large draw for LSU compared to Texas or Arkansas. Anding called himself “a Louisiana guy,” and he’s excited about getting to build his name and brand for the “best program” in his home state.

Anding is ranked as the 401st national prospect and the 37th ranked cornerback in the 2025 class, per the On3 industry composite rankings.

Anding is LSU’s 25th commitment in the 2025 class, a class which ranks 3rd nationally and 2nd in the SEC, only behind Alabama in the SEC.

Auburn RB Brian Battie Able to Leave Hospital

News was shared on Facebook recently that Auburn RB Brian Battie is able to leave the hospital.

His mother, Adrienne Battie wrote on Facebook, “we watched Brian walk out of the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the head. Words can’t express the joy and thankfulness we feel right now.”

This journey Brian Battie has been on stems back from a shooting in May that left four others wounded and killed Brian’s brother, Tommie.

3-Star TE Stevie Amar Commits to Boston College

3-star TE Stevie Amar committed to Boston College yesterday over Louisville, SMU, Texas Tech, Arizona, and other offers.

Amar is a California prospect who also had some offers closer to home, like Cal and BYU, but ultimately the tight end has decided to head across the country to Massachusetts.

Amar is the 831st ranked prospect nationally and 49th ranked tight end according to the On3 industry composite.

Boston College has a total of 23 commitments for the 2025 class, a class which ranks 58th nationally and 14th out of 17 teams in the ACC.
