CFB Roundup – December 3, 2024

Good morning, and welcome back to CFB Roundup from CFB Home – the first daily newsletter that’s all college football, all the time with no bias, no slant, and no fluff.

Liberty QB Kaidon Salter to Enter Transfer Portal

Salter has spent the last 4 seasons with Liberty after being dismissed by Tennessee’s program the summer before his freshman season.

Salter has thrown for 5,887 yards and 56 touchdowns while also rushing for 2,013 yards and 21 more touchdowns in his 35 appearances.

In 2023, Salter led the Flames to a perfect regular season and a Conference USA Championship before losing to Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl. After last season, Salter entered the portal, but removed his name from the portal shortly thereafter, staying with Liberty.

USC QB Miller Moss to Enter Transfer Portal

USC QB Miller Moss plans to enter the transfer portal after having spent the past 4 seasons with the Trojans.

Moss sat behind Caleb Williams for a couple seasons, not playing much in the first two seasons. Then, in his 3rd season he appeared in several games, including making his first start in the Holiday Bowl, where he threw 6 touchdown passes.

In 2024, he took over the starting role after Caleb Williams was drafted No. 1 overall by the Chicago Bears, but he was benched for UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava after 9 games.

While with USC, Moss has thrown for 3,469 passing yards and 27 touchdowns. He has one more season of eligibility.

App State Fires Head Coach Shawn Clark

App State’s press releases states, in part, “the expectation for App State Football is to annually compete for a conference championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff. We have commenced a national search to quickly find the next leader for App State Football.”

Clark was originally under contract through 2026, but was let go after going 5-6 this season and finishing 39-24.

Dana Holgorsen Agrees to 2-Year Deal as Full-Time OC with Nebraska

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Nebraska and Dana Holgorsen have agreed to a two-year deal to make Holgorsen OC of the Huskers program.

Holgorsen came to the Huskers in early November as an analyst and then was quickly named the coordinator and play-caller shortly thereafter. As the new OC Holgorsen is slated to make $1.2 million per season under the two-year deal.

Despite only having been with the Huskers for a few games, he helped play call the team to their season-high of 44 points against Wisconsin.

Robin Washut of On3’s Husker Online believed this was a move to retain 5-star QB Dylan Raiola: “My two cents on it is, if Matt Rhule didn’t make a move, the odds of Dylan Raiola not being here next season go up dramatically.”

5-Star OT Lamont Rogers Decommits from Missouri

5-Star OT Lamont Rogers decommitted from Missouri yesterday after committing to the Tigers back in early July.

This decommitment comes following a heavy push from Texas A&M trying to get the OT to come to College Station.

Rogers is rated highest by On3, ranking 16th nationally and 4th at the OT position. According to the On3 industry composite, Rogers ranks 18th nationally and 4th at the OT position.

With the loss of Rogers’ commitment, Missouri’s 2025 class is down to 9 Blue Chip commitments and 17 commitments overall for a class which ranks 18th nationally and 11th in the SEC.

5-Star WR Jerome Myles Not Signing During Early Signing Period After USC Decommitment

5-Star WR Jerome Myles decommitted from USC over the weekend and has now shared with On3’s Hayes Fawcett that he does not plan on signing during the Early Signing Period.

Myles was once an Ole Miss commitment before committing to the Trojans, but after a visit to Texas A&M this past weekend, he decommitted from USC. There is now some discourse amongst the recruiting experts that he likely ends up at Texas A&M, but he will not sign in the next couple of days when the Early Signing Period begins, and instead will take his recruitment into 2025.

Myles is rated highest by 247 as the one site to rate him a 5-star. But the On3 industry composite also has him as a 5-star as every site agrees he’s a top 40 player nationally and top 7 WR in the 2025 class. The On3 industry composite ranks Myles 24th nationally and 4th at the WR position.

USC’s 2025 class still has one 5-star commitment, 9 Blue Chip commitments, and 20 commitments overall for a class which now ranks 17th nationally and 5th in the Big Ten.

Oklahoma Announces Wazzu OC Ben Arbuckle as Next OC/QBs Coach

Oklahoma announced yesterday that it was hiring Washington State’s Ben Arbuckle to be the next OC and QBs Coach.

Arbuckle, only 29 years old, shared, “right off the bat, my first conversation with Coach Venables got me really excited. Hearing his vision for the program and the OU offense, I was in total alignment and ready to roll. To have this opportunity to join the University of Oklahoma football program, with its longstanding tradition of excellence, was so enticing to me and I wanted to be a part of it more than anything. It’s an honor and a privilege to be in this situation and I’m ready to hit the ground running and get this thing going.”

In 2024, Washington State’s offense ranked 12th nationally with 36.8 points per game under Arbuckle’s coordinating. He was also the OC in 2023 when he had Cam Ward as his quarterback, but his offense’s points per game went up about 5 points per game after Ward transferred to Miami this past offseason.

Coach Venables also shared that, “Ben is an extremely passionate and innovative coach who does a great job of finding ways to maximize his personnel. He has developed dynamic quarterbacks in his young coaching career and sees the QB game through a unique perspective and lens, as he played the position himself. He’s got an infectious energy and mindset, and is a fantastic teacher of the game with an impeccable work ethic.”

FAU Planning to Hire Texas Tech OC Zach Kittley as HC

FAU fired head coach Tom Herman in November, and now as the calendar turns to December, FAU quickly has its man – the OC of the Red Raiders who has also made stops at Houston Christian and Western Kentucky, where he coached and developed Bailey Zappe to NCAA record-breaking seasons.

Kittley is only 33, making him the youngest FBS head coach as of now.

Texas Tech finished with the No. 9 passing offense in the country and averaged 38.6 points per game in 2024.

FAU has not made a bowl since Lane Kiffin led the Owls to a Boca Raton Bowl win over SMU in 2019 when the Owls went 11-3.

Arizona OC Dino Babers Not Returning for 2025

Arizona is parting ways with OC Dino Babers in his first season with the program, according to a report.

Babers joined the Wildcats staff after being let go following 8 seasons at Syracuse.

With the Wildcats, Babers was the OC for new Head Coach Brent Brennan. And Babers had one of the best QB/WR combinations coming into the season with Noah Fifita and Tetairoa McMillan, but the offense averaged just 354.5 yards per game (98th) and 21.8 points per game (115th).

Late in the season, the play calling responsibilities were removed from Babers and given to TE Coach Matt Adkins, which was a sign that there was a potential change coming at the OC position.

This decision also comes after Arizona released a statement that Coach Brennan was being given a second season to figure out the problems with Arizona’s team. Notably, Arizona’s AD was not the one who hired Coach Brennan, as that AD was fired less than a week before hiring Coach Brennan.

Florida State Hiring Nebraska’s Tony White as DC

Florida State is hiring Nebraska’s DC Tony White as their new DC according to Gene Williams and Jeff Cameron of Warchant.

DC Adam Fuller was dismissed last month in the middle of his fifth season as Florida State’s defensive coordinator.

Coach White is well-respected in coaching circles as a defensive coordinator, making this a great hire for the Seminoles.

Nebraska’s defense currently ranks in the Top 20 for both scoring defense – 19.8 points per game – and yards allowed per game – 315.4 yards per game. There was talk that Coach White might be up for a head coaching job in the near future, but now he makes the to move to Tallahassee for FSU’s DC job for at least 2025.
