CFB Roundup – March 26, 2025
Good morning, and welcome back to CFB Roundup from CFB Home – the first daily newsletter that’s all college football, all the time with no bias, no slant, and no fluff.
Stanford Fires HC Troy Taylor
Stanford fired HC Troy Taylor yesterday morning, in a statement released by new GM Andrew Luck.
This decision comes less than a week after it was reported that Coach Taylor was the subject of multiple investigations for accusations of bullying and belittling female staffers.
In Luck’s statement, he shared, in part, “Additionally, in recent days, there has been significant attention to Stanford investigations in previous years related to Coach Taylor. After continued consideration, it is evident to me that our program needs a reset. In consultation with university leadership, I no longer believe that Coach Taylor is the right coach to lead our football program.”
In both seasons with Stanford, Coach Taylor went 3-9, good for a 6-18 overall record.
It will be interesting to see what the fallout is, as teams are in spring practice. This now opens a 30-day window for Stanford players to leave the program, as well as an opportunity for more dominoes to fall in a coaching carousel that was seemingly settled ahead of the 2025 season.
Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy on Reviving Bedlam in Spring Games
Deion Sanders is currently working on creating a Spring Game scrimmage against Syracuse that would also come with some joint practices leading up to the game, an idea which is starting to gain some traction with coaches around college football.
One person who is fond of the idea is Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy, who wants to see the opportunity be used as a way to bring back the Bedlam Rivalry game against Oklahoma.
“That’s something we’ve talked about. I think it’s a great idea… Honestly, for us, we should do a home and home with OU in the spring… They should come here on the 19th, I think their’s is earlier in the year, we should go down there and play a home-and-home against each other in the spring. Charge $25 a head, they can use it for NIL, we can use it for NIL. If they don’t want to do two in one spring, we can do one here this year, do it there next year, and split the gate. Because we get tired of practicing against each other. … It’s not going to be a live game. I don’t know what Coach Venables would say, but I would be concerned with making it live just because of injury. But nobody really has live scrimmages anymore, so you make it a full thud, like we’re doing, and practice against each other. Just like in the NFL.”
Georgia QB Gunner Stockton Offers Brief Response When Asked About Carson Beck
Graham Coffey of Dawgs Central reported that Georgia QB Gunner Stockton had a fairly brief response in response to the question of if former QB Carson Beck gave any warning about his impending transfer to Miami.
“He was busy,” Stockton said after smiling and shrugging.
To be fair to Stockton, Beck’s transfer, while not unsurprising itself, happened with little warning and he was at Miami fairly soon after entering the portal.
Hugh Freeze Signals Towards Doing Away with Spring Camp Altogether
Auburn Coach Hugh Freeze shared with AuburnLive’s Justin Hokanson that there “might be momentum” to do away with spring camp altogether, and instead opt for something similar to the model in the pros of having OTAs in June or so.
Ryan Day on Not Cancelling Ohio State’s Spring Game
Well over a dozen programs have done away with their spring games. However, reigning National Championship winning Coach Ryan Day has decided to not get rid of the spring game.
As for why, Coach Day shared, “I think it’s good for everyone to know. My plan is to have a spring game. I just think we need to save a little bit of wiggle room in case we take injuries. That’s it. We want to do this. We want to play a spring game. Now, there may be some guys that are held from the spring game, but not many. We feel like, I think, we’re 159 days away from playing Texas, and that day will matter to a lot of young players. So, well, we need to get out there and compete. The format of it, and how it works will probably be similar to what we’ve done in the past.”
Coach Day also shared, “so, it will be a great opportunity for fans and folks to see our guys and get out there and play. That part of it, to me, and it is what it is, but we’ve got to go do it. It’s important that we start the season fast and the first step is playing in the spring game. If we’re down some linemen or down some bodies and we have to adjust, we’ll figure it out from there. I guess, we’re just three weeks out here. So, we plan on playing in that spring game on April 12th. So, we’re looking at getting a great crowd and I know we’ve got some great things planned that day.”
Auburn with Major Changes for Spring Game
The Auburn program released a statement yesterday morning sharing that there were going to be major changes to the spring game this spring.
On April 12th, practice will “look more like a traditional practice” at Jordan-Hare Stadium, and it will begin at 11 AM with an alumni flag football game and a Tiger Walk at 11:30 AM. The A-Day practice will start at Noon CT and will run for an hour.
Following the practice, Coach Hugh Freeze and players will host a post-practice Fan Day autograph session that will last about 90 minutes.
This will also serve as the traditional Fan Day event usually held in August during Fall camp.
Auburn now joins other programs, like Alabama, Arizona, Florida State, Iowa, NC State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas, and USC, among others in a list from On3, to nix its spring game in favor of some modified sort of event.

Consensus 4-star OT Sam Greer committed to Ohio State yesterday over offers from Auburn, Florida State, Miami, and Wisconsin, among others.
Greer went on a visit to Ohio State last week, which he shared after, “I really enjoyed my time at OSU. It definitely felt different with all the new faces but in a good way. … They’re always playing to win and to prove something.”
Greer ranks as high as 99th nationally and 12th at the OT position (On3), but the On3 industry composite ranks him 148th nationally and 14th at the OT position.
For Ohio State, this is only the 6th commitment for the 2026 class, though it is still early. The Buckeyes have 5 Blue Chip commitments for its class, which currently ranks 5th nationally and 3rd in the Big Ten.

4-star DL Tomuhini Topui decommitted from Oregon yesterday.
Topui committed to Oregon back in October of 2024, when he seemed locked in with the Ducks over USC, Georgia, Texas A&M, Auburn, and other offers. Now, though, On3 insiders are reporting that USC is the team to consider in Topui’s recruitment.
Topui ranks as high as 71st nationally and 3rd at his position (ESPN), but the On3 industry composite places him 154th nationally and 15th at the DL position.
Oregon’s 2026 recruiting class is now down to 6 Blue Chip commitments and 8 commitments in total for a recruiting class which ranks 3rd nationally and 2nd in the Big Ten.

3-star CB David Davis committed to Penn State yesterday over his other finalists, Cincinnati, Michigan State, Nebraska, Pitt, and West Virginia.
However, it was always Penn State for Davis, as he visited Penn State on several occasions. Hiring Coach Knowles was the icing on the cake for Davis, sharing that he thinks his “skills and playing style would fit well in [his] system, especially with their focus on strong and adaptable defenders.”
Davis ranks as high as 299th nationally and 16th at his position, according to On3. The On3 industry composite has Davis a little lower at 346th nationally and 19th at the ATH position designation.
For Penn State, this is the 9th commitment of the 2026 class, a class which currently sits at 8th nationally and 4th in the Big Ten.
Iowa CB John Nestor Plans to Enter Transfer Portal
Iowa CB John Nestor shared on his social media that he plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal.
Nestor has been primarily a reserve CB for the Hawkeyes, appearing in 10 games each of the last two seasons. There was some thought that he might play a larger role in the defense this upcoming season, but with the spring window set to open in a few weeks, it appears as though he is making his intentions known early.
Nestor was a 3-star in the Class of 2023 and finishes his time with Iowa making 24 total tackles.
