#17 Boise State Closes First Half Well and Does Enough to Beat UNLV 29-24
Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty had a relatively quiet game, finishing with ‘just’ 128 rushing yards and one touchdown on 33 carries. He also added 3 catches for 11 yards. But this did not stop the Broncos from going to Las Vegas and beating UNLV 29-24.
It was a slow start for Boise State, who was down 10-3 through the first third of the game or so, as UNLV kept star RB Jeanty relatively bottled up.
But with a strong end to the first half that included 2 touchdowns and a UNLV interception in the final two minutes, Boise State did take a 20-10 lead into halftime.
From there, UNLV did score a couple touchdowns to take a 24-23 lead into the 4th quarter. But an 8-play, 75-yard touchdown scoring drive to open the 4th quarter proved to provide the winning score by none other than Jeanty.
After UNLV burned 4 minutes on its next drive before needing to punt, Boise State was able to salt the game away with a 14-play, 8-minute final drive to make it so UNLV would not see the ball again.
Boise State QB Maddux Madsen finished 18-for-33 with 209 yards and a touchdown. For UNLV, QB Hajj-Malik Williams finished 12-for-21 with 179 yards, 2 passing touchdowns, an interception, and also added 105 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown on 19 carries.
Louisville Completes 20 Point Comeback to Beat Boston College 31-27
Boston College opened this game with 20 unanswered points, but it was Louisville who would go on to have the last laugh as the Cardinals came back to win this one 31-27.
Tight end Nate Kuriskey only caught two passes for Louisville, but they were a pair of touchdowns, including the go-ahead touchdown in the 4th quarter that would bring the score to its final score. WR Ja’Corey Brooks and Ahmari Huggins-Bruce may not have scored touchdowns, but they did combine for over 200 receiving yards, with Brooks going for 120 and Huggins-Bruce picking up 86.
RB Isaac Brown also added a pair of TDs for the Cardinals, as he led all rushers in this game with 85 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 18 carries. QB Tyler Shough ultimately finished 28-for-38 with 332 yards, 2 touchdowns, but 2 interceptions.
For Boston College, Quintayvious Hutchins had a strong game defensively, adding 4 tackles. But where Hutchins made an impact was in both recovering a fumble and in picking off Shough once.
As for the offense, QB Thomas Castellanos finished 13-for-28 passing for 164 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also added 43 rushing yards. But it was Treshaun Ward who stuffed the stat sheet for the Eagles, as he led all Eagles in both rushing and receiving, finishing with 64 rushing yards and 81 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown. RB Kye Robichaux also added a rushing touchdown.
USC Snaps Losing Streak, Beats Rutgers 42-20
USC had lost 3 in a row before last night, but Rutgers never led or outscored the Trojans in a quarter in a fairly workman-like game for USC to snap the skid.
Though each team finished near each other in yards, with USC narrowly edging out Rutgers 443-434, the key difference was in yards per play, as USC finished with 8.69 yards per play compared to Rutgers’ 4.88. Also, both teams were 50% on conversion downs, but USC kept ahead of the chains by only seeing 3rd down 6 total times, compared to Rutgers who ended up 14-for-28. Sure, those are good conversion numbers, but in terms of consistent drives that are going to score points, seeing 28 conversion downs in a game is a sign that the offense is not doing enough on 1st and 2nd down.
For the Trojans, QB Miller Moss finished with 3 touchdowns, 2 passing and 1 rushing. He went 20-for-28 with 308 yards and no interceptions. RB Woody Marks also had a great game, finishing with 94 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. WR Makai Lemon also had a great game, finishing with 134 receiving yards and a touchdown on 4 catches. Finally, the Trojans allowed 0 sacks to Rutgers, a testament to a well-rounded offensive gameplan that may function as a get-right, bounceback game for a team that had been reeling.
For Rutgers, RB Kyle Monangai finished with 86 rushing yards on 18 carries while QB Athan Kaliakmanis finished 27-for-47 with 313 yards and a touchdown. Senior WR Dymere Miller had an impressive and reliable game, though, finishing with 131 receiving yards on 11 catches.
Ashton Jeanty Injury Update: Left Arm Injury
For those who missed the Boise State game last night (recap above), Ashton Jeanty did suffer a minor injury last night to his left arm.
Jeanty went into the medical tent in the first half briefly, where trainers wrapped his left forearm and elbow. However, Jeanty went back in before finishing with 128 rushing yards. It’s unclear at the moment what the injury was or the extent of the injury.
Davis Warren to Start for Michigan Against Michigan State
According to a report from CBS Sports, Michigan’s Davis Warren is expected to get the start against Michigan State.
Warren started the first three games of the season for the Wolverines but he has since taken a step back in the offense as Alex Orji and Jack Tuttle started.
Warren completed roughly two-thirds of his passes for 444 yards and 2 touchdowns in his 3 starts. However, interceptions were a bit of a problem for him, including going 11-for-14 with 3 interceptions against Arkansas State.
Earlier in the week, Sherrone Moore did share that he thought Tuttle would be the starter, so this is a bit of a switchup. Michigan and Michigan State will kick off at 7:30 PM on the Big Ten Network.
Marcus Freeman on Preparing for Navy
Notre Dame Coach Marcus Freeman recently opened up on what preparation from Notre Dame’s scout team has looked like in preparing for a Top 25 matchup against #24 Navy.
Freeman shared that Tyler Buchner and Anthony Rezac have been splitting reps as the Navy quarterback in practice.
It will be hard for Buchner and Rezac to replicate Navy QB Blake Horvath, though, who is currently 46-for-72 for 888 yards, 10 touchdowns, and only 1 interception. He also has added 621 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns on 7.9 yards per carry.
Missouri & Alabama Friday Injury Report
Missouri and Alabama play this weekend in a game that sees both teams trending in a slightly downward manner after starting the season with lofty expectations.
As for the Friday injury report, Alabama only has 3 names listed: DB Keon Sabb and LB Cayden Jones are out, and DB Red Morgan is probable.
But as for Missouri, it’s quite the list.
QB Brady Cook is questionable after injuring his ankle against Auburn. Also on the list as probable are WR Marquis Johnson, TE Brett Norfleet, OL Cayden Green, and then safeties Sidney Williams, Tre’Vez Johnson, Daylan Carnell, and Joseph Charleston.
All of the following Tigers are out: WR Mookie Cooper, RB Nate Noel, DE Darris Smith and Joe Moore, QB Sam Horn, and LB Khalil Jacobs.
Shedeur Sanders on Distributing the Ball Between Several Talented WRs
Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders has a bevy of options to throw to, and he recently spoke on how it works, trying to distribute the ball to so many solid options.
Between Travis Hunter, Will Sheppard, LaJohntay Wester, and others, there is no shortage of options. Both Sheppard and Wester were top options at their respective previous schools, though, which meant expectations had to be reset.
“That was the only thing at first that [Wester] had to understand coming here, everything’s gonna go down a little bit. So, then he worked his way into the best situations for him, the best situations and him knowing okay, this is my play, this is his play, and everybody’s really playing complimentary as a receiver group. That’s what’s most important. … Everybody understands the playing style, everybody understands each other now so we’re just always going to play to their strengths.”
Oklahoma & Ole Miss Friday Injury Report
Both Ole Miss and Oklahoma have some key players listed on the injury report, with Oklahoma having been hit particularly hard by the injury bug in the 2024 season thus far.
For Oklahoma, all of the following are out: WRs Jayden Gibson, Jalil Farooq, Nic Anderson, Andrel Anthony, Deion Burks, DBs Gentry Williams and Kendel Dolby, RB Gavin Sawchuk, and OL Geirean Hatchett.
For Ole Miss, four players are listed as probable, headlined by DE Princely Umanmielen. The list also includes LBs TJ Dottery and Khari Coleman, as well as WR Cayden Lee. Both WR Tre Harris and OL Jeremy James are listed as questionable, a tough break for the Rebels. And then RBs Matt Jones and Logan Diggs are listed as out, as are CB Cedrick Beavers and OL Jayden Williams.
Indiana’s Curt Cignetti: We Haven’t Faced Any Adversity
Curt Cignetti went on The Pat McAfee Show recently, and while on the show, he discussed how the Hoosiers have not quite experienced the adversity through the first 7 weeks that is characteristic of rebuilds.
Coach Cignetti is no stranger to building programs, having rebuilt Elon. But, “the difference between the two?” Coach Cignetti pondered, “All those wins [at Elon], like, went down to the last play. Here? We haven’t trailed yet. We haven’t given up a point in the first quarter. I mean, you know, you talk about handling adversity? We really haven’t had any adversity.”
As for the rest of the season, Coach Cignetti wants his guys focusing and preparing on the right now and leaving the big picture thoughts for outside the locker: “This is a natural process. You know – win, belief, success, fan support. We’re sold out for the rest of the season. You know, our guys in our organization have to stay focused on the things. They’re going to help prepare them to be the best they can be tomorrow to give themselves the best chance.”
