Nebraska Cancels Game vs. Tennessee and More!
CFB Roundup – February 22, 2025
Good morning, and welcome back to CFB Roundup from CFB Home – the first daily newsletter that’s all college football, all the time with no bias, no slant, and no fluff.
Report: Nebraska Paying $1M to Cancel Home-and-Home with Tennessee
According to Brett McMurphy of The Action Network, Nebraska is paying $1M to cancel the home-and-home it had scheduled with Tennessee for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
Nebraska was supposed to host Tennessee in 2026 before traveling to Knoxville in 2027, but ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting that Nebraska canceled the series due to Nebraska’s desire for eight home games in 2027 during planned renovations at Memorial Stadium.
Tennessee AD Danny White made his disappointment clear on Twitter, sharing, “we are very disappointed that they didn’t want to play these games, especially this close to 2026.”
Given how close it is, finding a home-and-home is going to be particularly challenging for Tennessee, as White explained, “you typically need 6, 7, 8, 9 years in advance to try and find that kind of arrangement.”
White also shared with the media, “we will make the most of it. If we are playing a neutral site game back in Nashville, Charlotte, or Atlanta, I think it will be a great experience for our fans and our players. … I know we will have some fans disappointed if we lose a home game in Neyland. Our goal is to try and replace this with another home and home. I just don’t know if that’s possible. … As it sits right now, there’s not a single opponent available to do that.”
Texas’ Steve Sarkisian Confirms No More Spring Games for Longhorns
Texas Coach Steve Sarkisian recently spoke with media personality Kay Adams to share that Texas was joining the ranks of plenty of schools to cancel their spring game.
Coach Sarkisian shared that his approach for the offseason is going to be a little different, and likened it to NFL OTAs.
Texas joins several other schools, like USC, Nebraska, and Ohio State to either cancel or significantly alter their spring game as growing concerns over tampering in the spring window continue. An additional concern is that by adding more games as part of the calendar with the expanded College Football Playoff, that players’ bodies need the rest from the increasing wear-and-tear that is only compounded with another game only a few months after the season ended.
Florida Promotes Russ Callaway to Offensive Coordinator
ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting that Florida’s Billy Napier is shaking up the coaching staff by promoting Co-OC Russ Callaway to the full Offensive Coordinator title.
Coach Callaway was previously serving as the Co-OC and TEs Coach alongside the other Co-OC and OL Coach Rob Sale.
This is a quick rise for Coach Callaway, who went from an off-field role in 2022, to TEs coach for 2023, and then Co-OC in 2024 before becoming the full OC in 2025.
Kentucky Names Nate Fuqua Defensive Analyst and OLBs Coach
Kentucky has hired Nate Fuqua away from Cincinnati as a defensive analyst and OLBs Coach. Fuqua has spent the past two seasons with Cincinnati as a Co-DC and OLBs Coach.
Kentucky HC Mark Stoops shared a press release, which said, in part, “he brings a lot of experience, as he’s been a defensive coach for more than 20 years, including a defensive coordinator the last 11. He’s also a Kentucky native and is familiar with this program, having grown up in Danville. He is a welcome addition to our defensive room.”
Before his time at Cincinnati, Coach Fuqua was with Georgia State as the Panthers’ DC and OLBs Coach. With Georgia State, the 2021 defense set a pair of school records with 38 sacks and 92 tackles for loss.

Williams ranks as high as 45th nationally (Rivals), and the On3 industry composite ranks him 65th nationally and 7th at the QB position.
This is USC’s 10th commitment for the 2026 class, a class which currently has 6 Blue Chip commitments and ranks 2nd nationally and in the Big Ten, behind only Oregon. Despite losing Williams, Oregon’s 2026 class still ranks first in the country, with 7 Blue Chip commitments and 9 total commitments.
