Michigan Receives NCAA Notice of Allegations for Sign-Stealing Scandal

There was a previous draft already reported on, but there were apparently some changes, though it’s unclear what those changes were. The timing of this is interesting, as the Netflix documentary “UNTOLD: Sign Stealer” is set to premiere on August 27th (Tuesday).

From the previous NOA draft, Michigan and Stalions were accused of scouting at least 13 future opponents on 58 occasions over the span from 2021 to 2023.

Another key to this will be on if there are any consequences for now-head coach Sherrone Moore, who the NCAA said deleted text messages (which were later recovered) between him and Stalions. It is unknown if the new NOA includes this as a possible allegation.

Mike Norvell on Offense’s Lack of Explosivity

Following Florida State’s 24-21 loss to Georgia Tech, one area where Mike Norvell wanted to see thorough improvement was in the offense’s explosivity.

Norvell shared that he thought “DJ did some good things,” and that “that was a really great job there in that fourth quarter drive.” Ultimately, the Seminoles offense left something on the table, as Norvell said, “There’s a couple of drives in the third quarter, there’s some opportunities that we’re going to be able to grow from and at the end of the day we have to be more explosive.”

Considering Florida State did not eclipse 300 total yards offensively and the metrics would indicate that DJ Uiagalelei did not look to push the ball downfield hardly at all, that will be something fans will watch and the coaching staff will try to improve upon for the rest of the 2024 season.

Consensus 4-Star Edge Bryce Davis Flips from Clemson to Duke

Consensus 4-star Edge Bryce Davis flipped his commitment from Clemson to Duke yesterday.

Duke pushed for Davis’ commitment originally in July before he committed to Clemson, but ultimately stuck with the DE and that persistence has paid off.

Davis looks at Duke as the best of both worlds for both on the field and off the field, between the academics as well as what coach Manny Diaz is building.

Bryce Davis is ranked highest by Rivals, who has him as the 53rd ranked prospect nationally and 3rd ranked prospect at his position.

According to On3’s industry composite, Davis ranks 73rd nationally and 10th at his position.

Davis becomes Duke’s highest rated recruit in the 2025 class as the only 4-star according to On3. Duke’s class also jumps up to 39th nationally and 9th in the ACC. Clemson’s class still ranks 3rd in the ACC and is now 14th nationally.

Rhett Lashlee on 2 QB System

Preston Stone started SMU’s game against Nevada, as was expected, but then backup QB Kevin Jennings came in for the third and fourth drive before being replaced by Stone for the rest of the game.

Jennings, not Stone, was actually responsible for SMU’s first scoring drive of the season, as his second drive ended in a touchdown for the Mustangs.

Lashlee revealed after that the plan all along was for Jennings to play the third and fourth drive because both deserved to play, and that was fair to Jennings to break it down that way.

After that, the plan was for Stone to get the fifth drive and go from there, hopefully getting Jennings more reps, but ultimately Stone played out the rest of the game.

Stone finished 17 for 30 with 254 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Jennings finished 4 for 5 with 54 total yards.

“You got to go with someone and like I said, [Stone] earned the starting job. He’s got the experience so we stuck with him and it worked out, but it had nothing to do with us not fully believing in Kevin. You’re gonna see more of Kevin.”

Oklahoma Releases Depth Chart vs. Temple

Oklahoma releases its first depth chart for the 2024 season for their season opener vs. Temple.

As expected, Jackson Arnold and Gavin Sawchuk are starting at QB and RB, respectively. At WR, Brenen Thompson, Jalil Farooq, and Deion Burks are also starting.

Some other key names starting include transfer center Branson Hickman, transfer nose tackle Damonic Williams, Danny Stutsman, Peyton Bowen, and Billy Bowman Jr.

4-Star WR Naeshaun Montgomery Commits to Florida

4-star WR Naeshaun Montgomery committed to Florida yesterday over LSU, Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, and others.

Montgomery considered the development of wide receivers under coach Billy Gonzales and coach Billy Napier, which was the main thing Montgomery cared about. Looking at that track record, that went a long way for the Gators to secure Montgomery’s commitment.

Rivals ranks Montgomery much higher than other recruiting services, ranking him as the 58th nationally ranked prospect, and both ESPN and Rivals rank him as the 10th best WR. The On3 industry composite ranking is much more modest on Montgomery, ranking him 249th nationally and 33rd at his position.

This is Florida’s 8th Blue Chip commitment and 14th commitment overall for a 2025 class which ranks 19th overall and 10th in the SEC.

Mike Norvell on Inability to Get Into Rhythm

As already covered above, Mike Norvell shared his thoughts on the lack of explosiveness in the Week 0 loss to Georgia Tech. But, with a yards per play around 5 yards, there was also a clear lack of rhythm that the Seminoles never quite could get figured out.

For Norvell, he believes that there were third-down opportunities that proved critical and were areas where the Seminoles struggled to build momentum. Norvell also credits Georgia Tech’s defense and defensive coordinator, specifically, for being able to keep the Seminoles from settling in and getting comfortable in key moments.

Norvell finally considered the finite number of opportunities that present themself in a football game, and he pointed out that they scored in about half of their drives. But because Georgia Tech made big plays in big moments, those scoring drives were too often field goals or there were too many missed opportunities on 3rd and 4th downs. “Those are all things that are the difference.”

Rhett Lashlee on Brandon Crossley’s Ejection

As covered yesterday, SMU’s Brandon Crossley was ejected from the Nevada game for spitting. Rhett Lashlee took some time to address, saying that earlier in the game, a Nevada player apparently spit on SMU WR Jordan Hudson before he open-hand slapped the Nevada player. A second Nevada player came and shoved Jordan Hudson which resulted in three penalties for Hudson and the two Nevada players.

Later in the game, Crossley then apparently spit on a Nevada player, which resulted in an ejection. Despite the allegation that Hudson was spit on, no Nevada players were ejected, but the Nevada player who Hudson claimed spit on him did get penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct despite not making any evident physical contact otherwise.

In any event, Rhett Lashlee said “we got to be better than that. We’ve got to have composure. There’s a difference between playing with passion and emotion. We were emotional a lot tonight. We got to be passionate, big difference.”

Brent Pry: Nick Gallo is 50/50

Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry has shared that veteran, sixth-year tight end Nick Gallo is 50/50 heading into the season opener against Vanderbilt.

Gallo missed some time in camp stemming from a knee injury suffered in fall camp in 2023, so he’s behind to some extent, obviously.

To give an idea of Gallo’s importance to the Hokies, he was named a captain in 2023 despite his season-ending injury. And despite not having played since 2022, Gallo does have almost 500 receiving yards from the tight end position, with a season-high 30 catches and 256 receiving yards in his most recent season seeing the field.

Brother of Lane Kiffin, Chris, Hired by Ole Miss as an Analyst

Lane and Chris have worked together before, as Chris was Lane’s defensive coordinator in 2017 while Lane was head coach of the Owls before Chris went and spent six years in the NFL.

In 2021, Chris briefly looked like he was returning to work with Lane on the Ole Miss staff, but ultimately Chris went back to his previous NFL job. Since working together in 2017, Chris has experience with the 49ers, the Browns, and, most recently, the Texans.
