The Maiden Voyage of College Football Roundup

College Football Roundup – June 16, 2024

Hello,

We’ve started a daily newsletter which highlights some stories in college football with no bias and no slant. We noticed there was no daily newsletter that was all college football, all the time. So we’ve decided to do that as objectively as possible.

If you’ve received this email, it means you’ve used your email to sign up for a Fifth Quarter subscription in the past but did not necessarily opt-in to this newsletter. We ask that you give us a chance, and feel free to submit constructive feedback for how we could improve. But if you were to choose to unsubscribe (there is a button at the bottom), we will not hold it against you.

That being said, thank you for those of you on our maiden voyage of College Football Roundup, and let’s get into it:

Three people were arrested and charged with capital murder in the death of Southern Miss DB MJ Daniels, who unfortunately passed on Tuesday.

Daniels previously spent two seasons with Ole Miss before transferring to Southern Miss prior to last season. He started for the Golden Eagles at cornerback and was expected to start this upcoming season after a position change to safety.

The three individuals (ranging from sixteen to eighteen years of age) charged for Daniels’ murder have also been charged with attempted armed carjacking and are all being tried as adults.

An opposing coach anonymously shared that they believe Arkansas Coach Sam Pittman could be out of a job by Halloween depending on how the season starts.

Another coach stated that the “bread and butter” of Arkansas’ offense is the offensive line, which they described as “horrible.”

The final coach anonymously interviewed stated that the hiring of John Calipari was a sign that the school’s priorities are winning, and Pittman does not have the program where it needs to be.

Billy Napier: Too Nice for Florida?

An opposing coach anonymously hypothesized that Napier has been struggling with his locker room and recruiting, largely because he’s too nice of a guy. This coach went on to share that he also believed that Florida has been lacking the disciplinarian type necessary since the days of Urban Meyer.

Another coach shared he believed that Florida’s success will largely come down to the defense, which will largely be based on the transfers brought in like Cormani McClain, Asa Turner, Jameer Grimsley, Grayson Howard, Trikweze Bridges, Joey Slackman, and others.

Bryce Foster was a highly top rated offensive linemen in the transfer portal and had been a multi-year starter for Texas A&M at center.

Prior to starting for multiple seasons at Texas A&M at center, he was a four-star recruit and one of the top rated interior OL in the country in the class of 2021. Given Kansas’ offense, this is a huge pickup for the Jayhawks.

Russell is rated in the top five of the 2026 class, and his recruiting process ramps up and he comes close to 50 offers, he shared with 247Sports his short list of schools which have been showing him the most attention and where he thinks he’s most interested in taking an official visit next season when that time comes.

He has listed Florida State and Syracuse as the two schools currently showing him the most attention, with Miami being another strong contender as the Miami-based recruit has some family ties to the University.

He also listed Syracuse, Florida State, Miami, LSU, Georgia, Alabama, and Oregon as the schools which he is currently the most interested in taking an official visit to.

Three-star running back Jasper Parker committed to Michigan over other programs such as Alabama, Oregon, Miami, Ole Miss, Penn State, and USC.

As for why Parker decided to commit to the Wolverines, he cited Coach Alford’s ability to develop running backs coupled with the quality of the Michigan education.

Parker made his decision during his official visit this past weekend, and shared it with others for the first time during the final official visit dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.
