CFB Roundup – April 14, 2025
Good morning, and welcome back to CFB Roundup from CFB Home – the first daily newsletter that’s all college football, all the time with no bias, no slant, and no fluff.
Former LSU WR Kyren Lacy Takes Own Life, Dies at 24
Reports emerged yesterday morning that former LSU WR Kyren Lacy had passed away at 24, which was confirmed by a family member according to WAFB-TV Sports Director Jacques Doucet. According to Baton Rouge TV station WBRZ, the death is being considered a suicide.
WBRZ and Lacy’s attorney also shared that Lacy was set to appear before a grand jury on Monday regarding a pending negligent homicide investigation, stemming from a December 17th car crash, which resulted in the death of Herman Hall – a 78-year-old, ex-Marine.
Lacy’s attorney released a statement following his death, sharing, in part, that it is important (to the attorney) that people understand the “District Attorney, to this day, has not formally charged Kyren.”
More details have emerged, though, that Lacy was reportedly being pursued by authorities at the time of his death. The chase reportedly ended with Lacy’s vehicle crashing, and when officers attempted to remove Lacy from the car, he had already died by gunshot wound in an apparent suicide. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Below is LSU’s statement on the passing of Lacy:
Statement from LSU on the passing of Kyren Lacy: “We’re saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former LSU Football student-athlete Kyren Lacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, as well as his former teammates and coaches impacted by his passing.”

Deion Sanders Refutes CU’s Potential Interest in QB Nico Iamaleava
Coach Deion Sanders took some time yesterday on Twitter to make clear that the Buffs are not looking to pursue QB Nico Iamaleava in the portal, when he is officially in the portal this week.

Iamaleava already is not going to be able to go somewhere in the SEC based on conference policy, and this now takes another option off the table for the QB.
Colorado already has true freshman and touted recruited JuJu Lewis, as well as Liberty transfer and veteran starter Kaidon Salter as a pair of options for a starting QB for the Buffs.
Josh Heupel on Tennessee’s New QB Situation and Plan
As Tennessee moves on to life post-Nico Iamaleava, Josh Heupel candidly spoke on what Tennessee’s plans are moving forward.
Currently, the Vols have two scholarship QBs on the roster: redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and true freshman George MacIntyre, both 4-star QBs in high school.
Coach Heupel shared, “at any time, your roster has the opportunity to change, that’s in December, that’s in the spring, right? As we go through the process, always evaluating what you have on your roster, where you’re vulnerable, where numbers might not be right [due to] injuries or whatever, and you’re trying to get your roster where it needs to be to give yourself the best chance when you get to kickoff in the fall. And certainly, with only two scholarship players at the quarterback position, we’re going to have to find another guy.”
Carson Beck Injury Update
Miami Coach Mario Cristobal updated reporters on the status of QB Carson Beck after the end of Miami’s spring practices this weekend as he’s been unable to do much thus far:
“The good part is, as our player-led practices come up, he’s going to be fully cleared for all of those, so he’ll have the opportunity to have about 16 of those before we even head into fall camp. Not to mention, going on his own with the players. So, there’s a lot of opportunity coming up. He certainly took advantage of whatever he could mentally, the physical part begins on Monday, so we’re excited for that.”
Beck’s involvement has reportedly been limited to just running and select throwing exercises as he recovers from UCL surgery.
Brent Venables on Oklahoma’s Plans in the Spring Portal
After Spring practice finished for Oklahoma, Coach Brent Venables spoke on the plan for the Spring portal window, sharing:
“You’re looking at probably every position on your team. You can, ‘well, we could use another guy there,’ and you really could. So we have our priorities and really don’t want to talk through those right now and see if we find anybody that can meet the needs and make us better immediately, and make a difference on the team where we might need some help. So, we’ll look at everything and see what’s available.”
Kirby Smart on the Influx of Agents in College Football
Following Georgia’s G-Day Spring Game, Coach Kirby Smart spoke on the meteoric rise of agents in the process of acquiring and retaining roster talent, sharing:
“There’s definitely more agents involved in the process this year than previous years and it’ll continue to grow in terms of representation, but the agents are just doing a job just like I’m doing a job, just like the parents do a job. Their job is to protect their client, try to get the best deal or the best situation for their client that they can, and I understand that. That’s the business side of it. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I think it’s only bad when we don’t have a system that has comps. We don’t have a system that says, ‘OK, this is what the comp is for a kid,’ and sometimes their comp and what our comp is are completely different. And, obviously, both sides are trying to slide things their way. That makes it really challenging. You don’t have that challenge in the NFL, because it’s public knowledge and you know what you’re working off of. Nobody really knows in college football what teams are working off of.”
Campbell WR Sincere Brown Commits to Colorado
Campbell WR Sincere Brown committed to Colorado yesterday after entering the transfer portal less than a month ago as a graduate transfer.
Brown has one season of eligibility remaining after being First Team All-CAA for the Camels and leading the team with 61 catches for 1,028 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Consensus 4-Star IOL Gregory Patrick Commits to Notre Dame
Consensus 4-star IOL Gregory Patrick committed to Notre Dame yesterday over offers from Michigan, Penn State, Michigan State, and others.
Patrick shared that, “I’ve had the same three priorities in recruiting: education, culture, and development. Notre Dame, they had everything. It was really just the people there. The relationships I built and the education, and they obviously develop linemen – they’re O-Line U.”
Patrick ranks highest on On3 (95th nationally, 7th at position), but the On3 industry composite places him 164th nationally and 10th at the IOL position designation, but Notre Dame sees Patrick likely playing tackle for the Irish.
For Notre Dame, this is the 8th Blue Chip commitment and 10th commitment total for an Irish team that ranks 5th nationally.
3-Star S Yaheim Riley Decommits from Houston
3-star safety Yaheim Riley decommitted from Houston yesterday after originally committing to Houston back on December 23rd of 2024.
This comes following a recruiting visit to Texas this weekend. Riley shared on Twitter that it was a difficult decision for him, but he believes it to be best for his future. He also shared he plans on taking official visits before deciding on where he is going to commit to play college football.
Riley ranks highest on Rivals (41st at his position), with the On3 industry composite ranking him 653rd nationally and 64th at the safety position.
For Houston, the class still has 4 total commitments, including 5-star QB Keisean Henderson. Houston’s 2026 class currently sits at 22nd nationally and 2nd in the Big 12.
