#25 Memphis Beats West Virginia 42-37 as Mountaineers Nearly Come Back from Down 3 Possessions

#25 Memphis had a 3-possession lead in this one, but West Virginia nearly came back, getting the score to 42-37. The Mountaineers were driving with only 20 seconds left before a Garrett Greene interception spoiled the comeback bid.

The game had a wacky finish, though, as Elijah Herring intercepted Greene and then had the ball punched out of his grasp by a Mountaineer trying to keep hope alive. Memphis ended up falling on the bouncing ball, but Herring returning the interception for a few yards nearly cost Memphis dearly.

West Virginia lost the turnover battle 2-0 and the yards per play battle 8.46-7.03, but also had some key statistics in its favor, showing how close of a matchup this was. Specifically, the Mountaineers had more first downs (25-18) and more total yards (534-474).

Looking at the box score, Garrett Greene was arguably one of the top performers for West Virginia, as Greene finished 29/40 for 328 yards, 2 touchdowns, and, of course, the 1 interception. He also was the leading rusher in this game, gaining 95 yards and a touchdown on the ground with his 7 carries, including a 56-yard rush that went for a touchdown.

In the receiving game, West Virginia was led by Hudson Clement, who finished with an eye-popping 11/166/2.

For Memphis, QB Seth Henigan was a methodical 18/26 for 294 yards and 2 touchdowns while also adding 61 rushing yards of his own. 3 Tigers scored on the ground, though, as Mario Anderson Jr. (17/70/1), Greg Desrosiers Jr. (2/48/1, long of 46), and Brandon Thomas (2/4/1) all found the end zone. Anderson also caught 6 passes for 22 yards and a touchdown.

Demeer Blankumsee (4/120/1) and Roc Taylor (5/116) led the Tigers’ receiving production, accounting for 236 of the 294 receiving yards.

Defensively, LB Chandler Martin led all tacklers in this with 17 tackles and a tackle for loss for Memphis.

With the win, Memphis finishes 11-2, its first 11-win season since 2019, when Memphis was 12-2 and Mike Norvell then left for Florida State. This also wraps up Memphis’ 11th consecutive season at .500 or better, having been led by Justin Fuente, Norvell, and, now, Ryan Silverfield in that time.

With the loss, West Virginia finishes with 7 losses for the 4th time in the last 6 seasons, as 2023 (9-4) and 2020 (6-4) were the only seasons of the Neal Brown era to have fewer than 7 losses, even though two of those seasons (2024, 2021) were seasons the Mountaineers finished 6-7 with a loss in a bowl game.

Sacramento State Planning to Hire UNLV OC Brennan Marion

According to a report from CBS Sports, Sacramento State is working to hire UNLV’s OC Brennan Marion to be its next head coach.

Coach Marion has been with UNLV for the last two seasons, helping the Rebels win 19 games. He also has experience with Pitt and Texas as he is a fast climber on a quick trajectory in the coaching world.

With Coach Marion as the OC, UNLV averaged well over 400 yards per game in each of his two seasons. Though, with Coach Odom headed for Purdue, it was unclear what Coach Marion was going to do, and, as it turns out, he’s going to be a first-time Head Coach.

Sacramento State, as a program, is in an interesting spot, as the Hornets are currently trying to jump to the FBS from the FCS’s Big Sky Conference. Local businesses, community leaders, and a local tribe recently gathered together to raise roughly $35M in NIL funds before announcing that it had actually surpassed its $50M goal, though, that figure is contingent on Sacramento State getting into the FBS.

Florida State Transfer QB Luke Kromenhoek Commits to Mississippi State

Former Florida State QB Luke Kromenhoek has committed to Mississippi State out of the transfer portal.

Kromenhoek took a visit to Starkville this weekend, and evidently it was a good enough visit to where Kromenhoek is now angling to be the starting QB of the Bulldogs for 2025 and beyond.

Kromenhoek was part of an FSU team this season that struggled offensively, as he appeared in six games and made two starts as injury and poor performance led to a rotating cast of starting QBs with DJ Uiagalelei and Brock Glenn both getting the rest of the chances.

In his time on the field, Kromenhoek completed 52.4% of his passes for 502 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. He was a high 4-star prospect according to On3’s composite rankings, with On3 even tabbing him as a 5-star. But now he’s planning to head to Mississippi State after the coordinator changes at Florida State.

Michael Vick to Become the Next Norfolk State Head Coach

The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel and Michael Sauls are reporting that Michael Vick is set to become the new Head Coach at Norfolk State.

Somewhat out of no where, ESPN’s Adam Schefter started reporting that Vick’s name was coming up for both the Norfolk State job, as well as the Sacramento State opening.

Vick played in the NFL for well over a decade and spent a brief time as an advisor to the Atlanta Legends of the AAF in 2019, but otherwise has no experience coaching. He recently has been spending his time as a TV analyst for some of FOX’s NFL coverage. But, now he heads to Norfolk State to look to turn around the Spartans, who went 4-8 in 2024.

OU Transfer WR Nic Anderson Commits to LSU

Oklahoma transfer WR Nic Anderson has announced his commitment to transfer to LSU.

This announcement follows soon after Florida State’s Destyn Hill and Kentucy’s Barion Brown have both also announced transfer commitments to LSU, who is apparently building up its wide receiver room with some dynamic playmakers.

Anderson missed all of 2024 with a nagging quad injury, but he had a strong 2023 season, finishing with 31 catches for 798 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Alex Grinch Now UCF’s Expected DC Hire

ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting that former USC and Oklahoma DC Alex Grinch is expected to be UCF’s Defensive Coordinator hire for new Head Coach Scott Frost.

Coach Grinch spent 2024 as the Co-DC of Wisconsin after being dismissed by USC during the 2023 season. He was with Coach Lincoln Riley for several seasons at both Oklahoma and USC, but his defenses struggled at USC, necessitating the change.

USC OC Josh Henson Top Target for Purdue’s OC Role

A report from Matt Fortuna is sharing that Purdue has zeroed in on USC OC and OL Coach, Josh Henson, to be its OC under new Head Coach Barry Odom.

Coach Henson and Coach Odom worked together for Coach Odom’s staff at Missouri.

Coach Henson also has previous experience at Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, and LSU after having been at USC for the past two seasons.

USC WR Zachariah Branch Plans to Enter Portal

USC WR Zachariah Branch plans to enter his name into the transfer portal according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

Branch just finished his true sophomore season, as his production dipped from his freshman season to his sophomore one in the return game, but his receiving production saw a slight uptick.

Branch currently has 78 catches for 823 yards and 3 touchdowns in his career. He’s also returned 29 kickoffs for 547 yards and a touchdown, as well as 29 punt returns for 406 yards and a touchdown.

Branch was a consensus 5-star and was the #4 ranked prospect nationally in the 2023 class. He’s the 3rd WR from USC’s Top 5 receivers from this season to enter the portal, as both Kyron Hudson and Duce Robinson have already entered the portal, with Hudson having already committed to Penn State.

Alabama 5-Star CB Jaylen Mbakwe No Longer Entering Portal

5-star CB Jaylen Mbakwe is no longer planning on entering his name in the transfer portal, even though he originally was planning on doing so as of yesterday.

This is a huge win for Alabama, as Mbawke was a highly rated player in the 2024 class – the 2nd highest ranked cornerback, specifically.

Mbawke appeared in 11 games as a true freshman, so he was even able to find the field so early in his time with Alabama.

TCU RB Cameron Cook Enters Transfer Portal

TCU RB Cameron Cook entered the transfer portal yesterday.

Cook was a former 4-star, as he was ranked 309th nationally in the 2023 class two seasons ago.

In his two seasons with TCU, Cook has 135 carries, 518 rushing yards, and 9 touchdowns.
