Billy Napier Confirms Plan to Play Both DJ Lagway and Graham Mertz

Florida coach Billy Napier recently shared that even once QB Graham Mertz clears concussion protocol, Mertz and true freshman QB DJ Lagway will likely both play.

Napier shared, “our intention the entire time has been to play DJ in every game. … It’s a blessing to have two really good quarterbacks and certainly one with a ton of experience and one without. But there’s no doubt both of these guys will make us harder to defend. We intend to use both of them.”

Lagway shattered the previous Florida Gators record for passing yards by a true freshman with 456 (previous high was 268 by Chris Leak in 2003).

Lagway getting more and more playing time as the season goes along, as On3’s Andy Staples believes that not only does Lagway give Florida the best chance to win, it also gives Napier the best (and also probably the only) chance to save his job.

Matt Rhule: Dylan Raiola At Whole Other Level

Dylan Raiola led Nebraska to an exciting win over Colorado where the true freshman QB looked poised and veteran.

After the game, coach Matt Rhule lauded Raiola’s energy and intensity, saying “he’s at a whole other level, and those other guys better pick it up.”

Rhule did not mean it as a knock against any other Husker specifically, but Rhule wants to see other members of the offense to play with a little more urgency and intensity to try and match Raiola.

For example, Rhule pointed out that there are free rushers on too many plays, which leaves Raiola vulnerable. And the numbers support that concern, as Raiola was pressured on 11 of 32 dropbacks against Colorado. But, Raiola also was able to have the poise necessary (and typically uncommon in a true freshman) to turn 11 pressures into 0 sacks.

Rhule also said that there’s a level of accountability on defense that he believes is unmatched nationally and the offense is still getting there. But Raiola was able to effortlessly transition from a certain style of plays – plays for man coverage – to a different style based on Colorado’s defense – Cover 2 beaters.

Injury Update on Georgia DE Mykel Williams

Georgia DE Mykel Williams sprained his ankle in Georgia’s first game against Clemson and then Williams did not play against Tennessee Tech in Week 2.

Georgia kicks off SEC play this weekend against Kentucky, and coach Kirby Smart said that for Williams to be able to play against Kentucky, he’s got to be able to practice. If he can go out, compete, run, put pressure on it, etc., then he’s got a chance to play.

Smart did also say that Williams is, “doing a great job of rehab. He did a great job this weekend of getting extra time in.”

As for Williams’ status, Smart said that as the week progresses, we’ll see where he’s at, an injury status which we will definitely continue covering as the week goes along.

Hugh Freeze: Payton Thorne Best In Practice, Needs to Carry Over to Games

Hugh Freeze shared recently that QB Payton Thorne has continued to shine in practice compared to the rest of the QBs, but that he needs to start carrying over some of that practice success into games.

Freeze said, “it’s really hard to not play a young man, whether it’s Payton or whoever, that consistently is the best performer in practice over and over and over again… However, you have to carry that over in games.”

However, second string QB Hank Brown will get his share of reps this week, Freeze also said. Brown was a 3-star QB in the 2023 class who threw for 96 yards and two touchdowns in the season opener this year.

Thorne threw 4 interceptions and passed for only 165 yards in the Tigers’ loss at home to Cal this past weekend, which has prompted even more questions (with some already existing) about Thorne’s long-term viability as Auburn’s QB1.

Northwestern Announces Change in Starting QB

Northwestern coach David Braun announced yesterday that the team was making a change at starting QB, going from Mike Wright to Jack Lausch.

Wright, the Mississippi State and Vanderbilt transfer, was 38-of-66 for just 336 yards in his first two games for an average of just 5.1 yards per attempt.

Lausch’s first start will come this weekend against FCS Eastern Illinois. Lausch was a 3-star QB in the 2022 class and was originally committed to play baseball at Notre Dame as an outfielder while being a preferred walk-on to the Notre Dame football team. After Northwestern offered him a scholarship to play quarterback, though, that changed things for him.

4-Star LB Christian Jones Commits to Nebraska

4-star LB Christian Jones committed to Nebraska yesterday over Oklahoma, Miami, USC, Notre Dame, and other offers.

For Jones, he really likes the defensive system for Nebraska and coach Dvoracek’s coaching style, citing both of those as big reasons for choosing Nebraska. The proximity to home was also a big selling point.

Jones ranks as high as 77th nationally and 6th at his position according to Rivals. According to On3’s industry composite rankings, Jones ranks 212th nationally and 23rd for his position.

This is Nebraska’s 6th Blue Chip commitment and 19th commitment overall for a 2025 class which jumps up to 26th nationally and 9th in the Big Ten.

Injury Update for North Carolina Edge Kaimon Rucker

Kaimon Rucker recently suffered a bit of a freak injury which caused him to miss the Charlotte game this past weekend, as he suffered a lower-body injury during a workout in the weight room.

Coach Mack Brown shared that Rucker is going to be fine, but that he’ll likely miss a little bit of time. Brown put the timeline at “probably a couple of weeks, maybe three.”

That being said, Brown also said that Rucker is in good spirits and is singing, jumping up and down, screaming, and leading during the games even if he isn’t on the field playing. “He led the fight song in the locker room after the game.”

Injury Update for Miami OT Jalen Rivers

Miami OT Jalen Rivers did not play in Miami’s Week 2 matchup against Florida A&M.

After the game, however, coach Mario Cristobal shared that Rivers was held out due to being a little banged up, but that he could be expected to return soon.

Rivers is in his fifth season at Miami and has started 22 games. In 2023, Rivers started every game at left tackle, so his return is a welcome thought for Hurricanes fans.

Oklahoma OL Geirean Hatchett to Miss Rest of Season

Oklahoma OL Geirean Hatchett is one of yet another Sooner OL that is on the injury report, although, Hatchett’s injury is particularly serious.

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables shared that Hatchett will miss the rest of 2024 with a bicep surgery.

Hatchett transferred to Oklahoma from Washington where he made a few starts at guard before starting at center for Oklahoma in its Week 1 game against Temple.

Michigan State OL Kristian Phillips Out Long-Term, Likely Rest of Season

Michigan State OL Kristian Phillips suffered a serious lower body injury this past weekend that Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith has said will likely hold him out for the rest of the 2024 season.

Phillips played in 11 games last season as a redshirt freshman but will now likely be done for the rest of 2024.

“You probably won’t see him again this year,” Smith said yesterday about Phillips. Phillips had made the first start of his career when he started at guard for Michigan State against FAU, but it appears that will be his only start of the 2024 season.
