CFB Roundup – February 17, 2025
Good morning, and welcome back to CFB Roundup from CFB Home – the first daily newsletter that’s all college football, all the time with no bias, no slant, and no fluff.
Dellenger: SEC & Big Ten Building Momentum to Expand CFP to 14 or 16
Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger is reporting that the SEC and Big Ten are building momentum to further expand the College Football Playoff to 14 or 16 teams.
According to the report, executives of the 10 FBS leagues and Notre Dame signed a memorandum of understanding which hands control over to the two power conferences.
With this control, the plan is for them to assign automatic qualifiers per league, with as many as 4 each between the SEC and Big Ten, and then finalize a scheduling agreement together to earn additional TV revenue.
Dellenger wrote, “[t]he playoff format change would clear the way for SEC administrators to, finally, make the long-discussed move to play nine regular-season conference games and would trigger, perhaps, all four power leagues to overhaul their conference championship weekend.”
Additionally, Dellenger shared that it would come with 4 automatic qualifiers for the SEC and Big Ten, 2 for the ACC and Big 12, 1 for the highest ranked G5 champion, and 1 or 3 at-large spots, presumably for Notre Dame, in the event Notre Dame is ranked inside the Top 14 (or 16). Essentially, the College Football Playoff Committee’s impact on the sport would be greatly diminished, especially for a 14-team field. It would lead to the Committee essentially deciding on the top-rated G5 champion and if the Irish are within the Top 14, or if another team should be ranked ahead of it. And for a 16-team field, they would be left to determine teams 14, 15, and 16
In both models, the seeding would strictly be done 1 through 14 (or 16), and in the 14-team field, the top 2 finishers would receive byes, regardless of their status as conference champion or anything else – only final ranking matters in that case.
Dellenger finally shared, “in either multi-AQ playoff proposal, conference championship games likely become less valuable, and a reimagined championship weekend may feature conference play-in games for the automatic berths … these discussions, though preliminary, are happening at the highest levels of conference leadership.”
Oklahoma Hiring Former Tulsa HC Kevin Wilson as Offensive Analyst
Oklahoma is reported to be bringing back former Tulsa HC and former Oklahoma OC Kevin Wilson to be an offensive analyst for Brent Venables’ staff in Norman.
Coach Wilson was the OC for the Sooners back when Sam Bradford and the Oklahoma offense made it all the way to the National Championship and Bradford hoisted the Heisman trophy. For about 5 seasons, Oklahoma’s 716 points scored during the season were the most all-time.
After being the OC for 5 years at OU (with more years at OU before then), Coach Wilson went on to be the Head Coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from 2011-16, then the OC of Ohio State from 2017-22, and then was the HC of Tulsa for 2023-24, posting a 7-16 record across two seasons.

He also is planning to announce his commitment this summer: August 2nd.

However, Miles shared with On3 that Oklahoma and SMU are the teams to beat. “They both got at me early and I’ve been to both campuses quite a few times, so I’m just comparing the pros/cons for every school compared to them.
