Dabo Swinney: Getting Back to Basics, The Wins Are Gonna Come

Clemson opened the season with an absolute lambasting at the hands of Georgia, by a final tally 34-3.

Despite this, Dabo Swinney sees the path forward for Clemson as one of optimism. Effort, belief, physicality, toughness, and how you play were all things Swinney said for what Clemson needs to focus on going forward.

“It’s how you play. And if you play the right way then good things will happen. … I think the wins are gonna come. Because you play with the right foundational things, the rest of it will come into play.”

As for the rest of Clemson’s schedule, it’s home for the rest of September, against Appalachian State, a bye week, NC State, and Stanford. Other notable contests include trips to Florida State on October 5th and Virginia Tech on November 9th, and home contests against Louisville on November 2nd and the regular season finale at home against South Carolina on November 30th.

4-Star OT Malachi Goodman Commits to Penn State

Consensus 4-star OT Malachi Goodman committed to Penn State yesterday over offers from Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, and others.

For Goodman, the biggest reason he committed to Penn State was the development he believes he can be getting from the coaching staff in Happy Valley. He said he could see himself at a number of schools, so this was a tough decision narrowing it down to one, but ultimately he liked the coaching staff and decided he wanted to commit to Penn State last week.

Goodman ranks as high as the 107th ranked prospect nationally (On3) and the 7th ranked player at his position (247Sports). According to the On3 industry composite, Goodman ranks 130th nationally and 11th at his position.

This is Penn State’s 13th 4-star commitment and 25th commitment overall for the 2025 class, a class which ranks 16th nationally and 4th in the Big Ten.

Kirby Smart on Etienne Suspension: It’s Not Something I Talk About

Georgia RB Trevor Etienne did not play in Week 1 against Clemson due a team suspension stemming from his offseason DUI arrest which resulted in the charges being dropped as part of a no contest plea agreement. Following the game, it came out that Etienne’s suspension might not only be for one week, but more information was not shared on the exact length of suspension that Etienne is facing.

When asked if Etienne will play this weekend against Tennessee Tech, Smart said, “again, we don’t talk about it. It’s not something that I share or talk about. Respectfully, respect your question.”

Ultimately, Smart said his goal is to defend his players and avoid making more headlines. “It’s not gamesmanship at all for me … I want to defend the kid. To discuss it again and say it again, then it’s another whole headline out there.”

Injury Updates on Georgia’s Warren Brinson, Mykel Williams, & Joenel Aguero

Both DL Warren Brinson and Edge Mykel Williams suffered injuries in Georgia’s opening game against Clemson.

Coach Kirby Smart shared some updates on each of their statuses after Tuesday’s practice ahead of the Week 2 matchup against Tennessee Tech.

“Mykel [Williams is] out there, watching our guys, doing rehab, been in all the walkthroughs and things, but he’s not participating.” Williams suffered a Grade 2 ankle sprain.

As for Warren Brinson, Coach Smart said that he’s “got a shot” to play following his calf contusion that forced him out of the game before he was seen on the sideline with a wrap around his lower leg and ankle.

Finally, DB Joenel Aguero gave coach Kirby Smart he may be ready to go in Week 2 after sitting out all of Week 1. “It’s a soft tissue injury. Joenel practiced, did everything today. I wouldn’t say he was 100%, but he practiced and did everything.” It’s also worth noting that Smart did also say, “I would say that Joenel [Aguero]’s ahead of Warren [Brinson].”

Shane Beamer: Most Coaches Won’t Mess with Injury Report

South Carolina coach Shane Beamer recently shared some thoughts on the new mandatory injury reporting from the SEC, saying that he doesn’t expect many coaches to rearrange their schedules and spending time on it.

Most coaches already work closely in conjunction between their athletic training staff and their coaches to make sure everyone is aware of every player’s injury situation, so Coach Beamer sees this more so as a little more paperwork for the training staff to deal with rather than a large change that coaches will need to deal with.

“I would imagine a lot of head coaches aren’t even going to mess with it, they’re just going to give it to the trainer. And the trainer’s going to say, ‘does this look good?’ and the head coach is going to look at it for five seconds and say, ‘yeah, it’s fine.’”

Chip Kelly’s Initial Thoughts on TreVeyon Henderson & Quinshon Judkins

Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson shared 21 carries between themselves in Ohio State’s Week 1 contest against Akron. Ohio State OC Chip Kelly wants to see those numbers increase, sarcastically saying that it would’ve been better for one of the running backs to have gotten 43 carries and the other to have gotten 40, “but I don’t think we’re going to get that many snaps in the game.”

Kelly also acknowledged that there wasn’t a set plan, but running backs coach Carlos Locklyn works to keep both guys fresh with who is in the game and who is out and Kelly hopes the Buckeyes run the ball more with them so their carry numbers do go up.

Kelly also said that he does not call the offense any differently if either of them are in the game, saying that they both have enough physicality to run between the tackles and they both also have enough speed to get to the perimeter. He did also say that at this point, they just need to get a little more chemistry and feel with the offense.

Injury Updates on Ohio State’s Donovan Jackson, Cody Simon

Ohio State faces off against Western Michigan this weekend, and the injury status of OL Donovan Jackson and LB Cody Simon are something being focused on, to see if they will be good to go against the Broncos.

Coach Ryan Day shared that they are both listed as day-to-day and their statuses will be updated throughout the week as we get closer to the start of the game. But he did say that both had a good weekend.

Plus, following Week 1’s win over Akron a couple days prior, Day had said that Jackson was going to have a full week this week and Day was planning on Jackson playing in Week 2. Day also shared that if he doesn’t have a full week of practice, he’s had a setback. Obviously, they want to be smart about how they treat the injuries, and he’s only going to play if the trainers give him the thumbs up.

Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman: No Excuses for How I Played

Texas A&M lost at home in Week 1 to Notre Dame in a game that was far from polished offensively for either side. One notable difference was the difference in play from Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman and Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard.

In reflecting on his performance, Weigman shared that “there’s no excuses for how I played. Literally point blank, period, I’ve got to be better. That’s what I told [my teammates] this morning.”

While it may not make Aggies fans feel much better after a QB completes 40% of his passes for a total of 100 yards and 3.3 yards per attempt, it should provide at least a little solace that there is still some leadership in the locker room as Weigman is a redshirt sophomore and has only played in 10 total games in his college career.

Injury Updates on Virginia Tech’s LB Will Johnson

Virginia Tech senior linebacker Will Johnson suffered an injury in the Hokies’ first contest of the season against Vanderbilt, and is expected to be out for an extended period of time.

Coach Brent Pry did not share a timetable or any specifics on what the injury is, but he did commend Johnson’s toughness and acknowledge that his injury was not minor.

“I knew when I saw him kind of in agony out there, it wasn’t something minor. Because otherwise he would’ve bounced up, limped off if he had to. So he’s going to be out of commission for a little bit, we hope to get him back at some point down the stretch.”
